Why do some people drive without insurance?

Ideally, all drivers would have insurance. If they got involved in accidents, this insurance would help to cover the costs, from property damage to the other vehicle to medical expenses due to injuries.

But the reality is that many people will drive without insurance. This is a violation of the law and it’s a significant risk because they won’t be covered if they get involved in an accident. So why do people do it?

They believe it costs too much

The top reason is that people claim they can’t afford car insurance. There are others who could technically afford it but do not want to pay for it. They are just trying to cut costs, they think insurance is too expensive, and they decide to risk it and drive without insurance to save money in the short term.

They don’t care about fines

Drivers can be fined if they’re caught driving without insurance. But there are those who decide that they’d rather just pay the fine if they get caught, instead of paying for the insurance upfront. Again, it’s just a financial issue, and they’re trying to decide what will save them the most money – rather than what will be safest.

They don’t know that they need it

Finally, there are certainly those who don’t understand that they need insurance or think that they do have proper coverage when they don’t. They may be young and driving for the first time. They have simply overlooked this requirement.

If you have been struck and injured by an uninsured driver, your situation can become very complex, very quickly. Be sure you are well aware of all of the legal options at your disposal.
