Cyclist killed in South Los Angeles car collision

Biking in California would conjure up the image of lane-splitting motorcycles on the highway before bicyclists cranking away on the side of the road. But cycling has taken off in the Golden State recently, especially in expanding urban areas amenable to bikes, and increased numbers of bicycles can also bring increased risk.

A 54-year-old cyclist was struck by a car around 10:30 in the evening on a recent Monday in South Los Angeles. Police detained the driver who is suspected of striking the bicycle, while another vehicle fled the scene and is being sought by investigators.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said witnesses saw two vehicles speeding near each other on South Broadway near the scene of the crash, and that one of those vehicles struck the bike. Several parked cars nearby were also damaged in an incident police suspect may have been related to an illegal speed racing game.

Reckless driving of any time is very dangerous to bicyclists, pedestrians and others on the streets who are not protected by vehicle frames. Negligent driving, such as cellphone use behind the wheel, is far more common and most drivers are guilty at one time or other. All it takes is a moment of inattention to create a tragedy.

Bikers struck by cars and trucks in California have the right to claim financial damages to help with medical recovery or property loss. An attorney can help analyze the situation and help a victim and his or her family press claims for damages in civil court or a pretrial settlement.
