These 3 tips can keep you safer as you cycle

No one can ever prepare for catastrophic injuries. These include serious head and brain trauma, spinal cord injuries and other life-threatening wounds. They often leave people with devastating symptoms for a long period.

Cyclists in California are at risk of being involved in a fatal or serious collision. The injuries they suffer are more likely to be catastrophic. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe while on your bike:

1. Always err on the side of caution.

You may have the right-of-way, but that doesn't matter when a two-ton car is about to hit you. It's always in your best interest to do what is safest for yourself, whether that's waiting a few extra seconds for an impatient driver to pass or pulling off to the side of the road to allow a driver with road rage to get around you.

2. Avoid distractions.

While it's most often drivers who are distracted and end up hurting cyclists, there is the possibility that you'll get hurt if you're distracted, too. Always look where you're going and check your surroundings. You should be on the watch for people who may be about to open their car doors into your path, for animals chasing you and for drivers who aren't stopping at intersections like they're supposed to.

3. Wear your helmet.

Finally, wear a helmet. There is nothing that will do more to protect your head, neck and brain than your helmet. Remember to put it on every time you ride.

These are a few tips for your safety. Be cautious out there, and it could save your life.
