Not only is cycling an enjoyable and healthy way to get around, but it’s a great way to do your part in reducing carbon emissions. But, as most cyclists realize, sharing the road with cars and other vehicles can be dangerous.
Here are some common safety concerns for cyclists so you can know the hazards and how to stay safe.
Traffic Accidents
One of bike riders’ most significant hazards is the risk of getting into a traffic accident. Cars and other vehicles may not see or hear bike riders, and collisions can occur when drivers make turns or change lanes without checking for bikes.
Dooring
Dooring occurs when a driver or passenger opens the door of a parked car without checking for bike riders. This can cause bike riders to collide with the door or swerve into traffic to avoid it.
Passing Too Closely
Automobile drivers may not leave enough space when passing cyclists, especially on narrow or crowded roads.
Poor Road Conditions
Potholes, debris, and construction zones can cause cyclists to lose control and fall.
Distracted Drivers
Drivers who are texting, eating, or engaging in other activities while driving may not see or hear cyclists which can cause accidents.
Honking
Honking can startle cyclists and cause them to lose control. Motorists should only use their car horns to alert a cyclist in an emergency.
Without the use of designated bike lanes, automobiles pose several hazards to bike riders. Cyclists have a legal right to share the road, and it’s important that motorists treat them with respect and caution to prevent accidents and injuries. If a negligent driver has caused you injuries, be sure to seek legal guidance.
