Modern pickups have serious visibility issues

If you have seen modern pickup trucks in the last few years, it is clear that they have gotten larger. They are heavier than they used to be, and modern trucks have gained roughly 11% in height over the last two decades.

This has created some major visibility issues. Many of these new trucks have flat, blunt front ends. The driver cannot see over their own hood.

Because of this blind spot, there are significant dangers to cyclists and pedestrians. A driver making a right-hand turn could hit a cyclist in the bike lane, for example, that they never saw. They could also hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk in the same fashion.

These trucks are increasingly popular

Another part of the equation is that these trucks have grown to be incredibly popular across the U.S. They make up roughly 20% of new vehicles.

On top of that, some of the design trends have transferred to similar vehicles. Many large SUVs have the same blunt front ends, for example, meaning that they can be just as dangerous as a pickup truck. As these vehicles become more common, the risks to cyclists keep increasing.

Seeking financial compensation

It is important for cyclists to be aware of some of the risks they face on the road, but there is nothing they can do to alter vehicle design or purchasing trends in the United States. As long as these trends remain consistent, serious accidents are going to continue happening. Those who have suffered injuries in a bicycle accident or family members who have lost a loved one need to know what legal options they have at this time.
