Bicyclists are at risk of head injuries

Many people choose to bicycle as a mode of transportation or as a way to get exercise. Anyone who opts to ride on a bike must ensure that they’re taking proper safety precautions before they head out, partly because they can’t control how other people will behave.

One of the most important safety precautions bicyclists can take is to wear a helmet. This one act alone can mitigate some very serious risks while they’re out cycling. Helmets can reduce the risk of a severe brain injury by 75% if it’s a suitable helmet that fits the rider properly. They can also reduce the risk of upper and middle facial injuries.

A proper helmet is critical

In order to have the most protection possible, you have to have a helmet that fits properly. It should be snug and have minimal movement, even if you haven’t fastened the straps yet. Additionally, it should be positioned approximately two fingers above your eyebrows.

When you’re out looking for helmets, be sure that you find one that’s approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Helmets must pass rigorous testing in order to receive this approval. If the helmet is approved, there should be a sticker that clearly states that on the inside of the helmet.

You also need to check the helmet to ensure that it’s in good condition. It should be replaced if you’re involved in an accident or crash. You also need to get a new one if there are dents or cracks in the helmet or foam liner. Faded shells and worn areas on the fasteners and straps also indicate that a new helmet is needed.

Even with a properly fitting helmet, there’s still a risk of injuries if you’re involved in a crash caused by a negligent motorist. Seeking compensation for the financial damage after that type of incident is possible, but it must be done within the time limit set by state law.
