Most common injuries for cyclists after accidents

Negligent drivers are involved in accidents with cyclists year after year. Even a cyclist who is riding safely could be struck by a driver while overtaking, while turning or while stopped in traffic.

These accidents can often lead to severe injuries. Cyclists don’t have much protection, even in the best possible situation. They’re very susceptible to injuries when hit by vehicles, even at low speeds.

Head injuries

Even with a helmet, a cyclist could suffer significant head injuries. These could include:

  • Facial fractures
  • Lacerations
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Skull fractures
  • Concussions

These injuries can lead to significant pain and suffering, may necessitate emergency medical treatment and could even result in disfigurement.

Road rash

Another risk for cyclists is road rash. This happens when exposed skin slides on the pavement, such as if a cyclist is hit by a car in an intersection. The pavement can scrape off large portions of the skin, which is incredibly painful and runs the risk of infection.

Internal injuries

Some cyclists can also suffer from internal injuries. These could include:

  • Punctured lungs
  • Broken ribs
  • Internal bleeding

It’s very important for cyclists to get medical attention after they’ve been struck by a car, even if they don’t think they have serious external injuries. They may not know the full extent of the internal damage they’ve suffered, so medical treatment may still be necessary.

This medical treatment can be very expensive, however. Cyclists could also lose wages as they miss work and recover from their injuries. For all of these costs and many more, it is important for cyclists to know how to seek financial compensation from the negligent driver who caused the crash.
