These 3 trucks hit cyclists most often

When studying cyclist accidents, a clear danger comes from pickup trucks. In many studies, the vehicle involved in the majority of cyclist accidents is a pickup truck. This isn’t to say that sedans, sport utility vehicles and other types of vehicles aren’t threats—they certainly can and do cause serious cycling accidents—but pickup trucks pose a uniquely high risk.

For instance, from 2007 to 2021, one study found that the Chevrolet Silverado was involved in the most cyclist accidents, striking 418 cyclists. Next was the Ford F-150, with 402 incidents. Following that was the Dodge Ram, which was involved in 288 crashes with cyclists. These three pickup trucks were well ahead of smaller vehicles like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Notably, the GMC Sierra ranked seventh, with involvement in 174 cyclist accidents.

Why are these three trucks the most dangerous for cyclists?

If you’re wondering why pickup trucks are such a hazard to cyclists, part of the issue is visibility. Over the years, pickup trucks have become larger and taller, creating significant blind spots. For example, a driver in a pickup truck stopped behind a cyclist at a red light may not be able to see the cyclist at all. Accidents often occur when pickup truck drivers merge into cyclists, such as when crossing through a bike lane to make a right turn.

The sheer size of these vehicles also increases the risk. Pickup trucks have blunt front ends, making it more likely they will knock a cyclist down, putting them at risk of being run over. By comparison, a small sedan may be more likely to knock a cyclist onto the hood, resulting in less severe injuries. This is why accidents involving pickup trucks are more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries.

Cyclists often have no choice but to share the road with pickup trucks. Those who have been injured need to know how to seek financial compensation from these negligent drivers.
