Common hazards for all cyclists

Between congested roads and the high gas prices, more people are choosing a better way to commute and run errands. Bicycles are becoming the preferred mode of transportation for thousands of Californians.

Bicycles are a fun way to exercise, pick up a few groceries or spend an afternoon with the family. However, cycling has its own set of issues.

Sharing the road

Approximately 1.3 million California residents either walk or bike to work. With the growing popularity of e-bikes and a desire to reduce carbon emissions, that number will continue to increase.

Still, bicycle riders must be aware of the various hazards they may encounter, as they have a greater risk of receiving a catastrophic injury in an accident. Some common problems all cyclists face include:

  • Potholes, loose gravel, wet leaves, grass clippings and debris on the road
  • Unexpected weather changes
  • Mechanical issues, such as blowing a tire or faulty brakes

One of the biggest challenges for cyclists is sharing the road with motor vehicles. Cars turning at intersections, opening doors in your path or failing to see you in their blind spots are all potential dangers when riding along city streets.

Sharing the road requires mutual respect among cyclists and motorists. Before getting on your bike, ensure it’s in good working condition with the brakes, gears and tires. Wear visible clothing and use hand signals for stops and turns.

Motorists can do their part by:

  • Giving at least three feet of buffer space when passing a cyclist
  • Double-check blind spots before changing lanes or making turns
  • Use turn signals
  • Respect bike lanes by not driving or parking in them
  • Check for cyclists before opening the car door

Everyone working together creates an environment where bikers and motorists can safely use the streets. But if an accident does occur, it’s imperative you contact someone who can protect your rights.
